High potential and gifted education
At Mount Druitt Public School, we believe every student has the potential to achieve great things. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where all learners, regardless of their background, can grow and succeed. We recognise that some students excel quickly and demonstrate strengths in areas such as creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and sport. Our goal is to nurture these talents from an early stage by providing stimulating and challenging learning opportunities. Through our belief in each student's ability to achieve, we empower advanced learners to explore their passions, develop confidence, and reach their full potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential Students
High potential students demonstrate abilities or talents that surpass those of their peers in one or more areas. Their capabilities may be identified as above the typical range for their age group. These students often thrive when provided with enriched or accelerated learning experiences that go beyond the standard curriculum designed for their age.
Gifted Students
Gifted students possess abilities that greatly surpass those of most peers in one or more areas. It is generally estimated that around 10% of students fall into this category. These learners often develop skills and achieve expertise at a much quicker pace than others their age. They thrive when provided with an expanded curriculum and learning experiences that go well beyond the standard expectations for their age group.
Highly Gifted Students
Highly gifted students demonstrate exceptional abilities that far surpass those of their age peers in one or more areas. Their potential is typically ranked within the top 1% or less of students of the same age. To support their unique learning and wellbeing needs, these students often require tailored and substantial adjustments to the curriculum.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Mount Druitt Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education is a fundamental part of our teaching and learning culture. We believe every student has the ability to think deeply, create imaginatively, and strive for personal excellence. Many of our students demonstrate high levels of potential across intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical areas. We are committed to nurturing these strengths with intention, ensuring students are inspired, challenged, and supported to achieve meaningful growth.
Our dedicated teachers design and implement personalised, differentiated programs that respond to the unique learning needs, interests, and abilities of each student. Using evidence-based approaches, educators adjust the pace, content, and complexity of lessons to provide rich learning experiences that encourage critical thinking, independence, and curiosity. Open-ended tasks, targeted enrichment, and purposeful extension opportunities are regularly incorporated into classroom practice.
We foster inclusive, student-centred classroom environments that promote positive attitudes toward all aspects of learning. By recognising and supporting each student’s passions and talents, we strive to engage them in meaningful, authentic learning that fosters creativity and a lifelong love of discovery.
Partnering with parents and carers through our Student Success Summits, we develop personalised learning goals that are responsive to student progress. Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning to enhance their ability to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with high potential, ensuring Mount Druitt Public School remains a place where every learner is empowered to thrive.
